Stokes Bay TT, 26th/27th June 1999
Just short of 70 Dart18s travelled to Gosport in Hampshire for the Andark Stokes Bay 4th Grand Prix of the Year. This was the first Dart event since the battering at Weymoth at the start of the month and if anything it helped to increase numbers with the best Grand Prix tunout of the year so far. The competition was Red Hot with 2 boats even making the trip from France to battle with the current World Champion and several former National Champions.
5 Races were held over the two days using a sausage- triangle course with a downwind finish. Race 1 got underway first time with Long Lost Brother ( Dan Norman & Sally Croucher leading from Chris & Gary Moore in an easterly force 3. On the second beat Easthams-Typhoon (David Lloyd & Joanna Jones-Pierce) took second place from the Moores but Long Lost Brother held off their challenge on the last lap.
Race 2 saw the tide turn and with it now behind the fleet on the start, it took the black flag to get the fleet away on the second attempt. The wind shifted on the start suddenly changing the bias from starboard to port. This left Crewsaver (Jon & Robert Garcka) to lead from start to finish with the Moores close behind and fellow local team Rex Legge & John Warner taking third.
The evenings entertainment was the excellent ‘Booze Brothers’ which was sponsored by Andark diving and watersports.
Sunday saw the wind in the South-West and varying from force 3-5 with the odd gust of up to force 6 . In Race 3 Arthur Andersen’ (Gareth Owen & Amanda Gadsby) the current World Champion regained his form holding off a challenge from ‘Robert Fletcher Farming’ (Bob & Alison Fletcher) which resulted in the Fletchers doing turns. Long Lost Brother was a consistant 2nd with French team Herve LeMaux & Damian Hickling 3rd.
After lunch the wind increased and again with the black flag rule in force it was the third attempt before the fleet got away. Long Lost Brother took the lead only to lose out to Lawrie Draper & Bettina Harvey who judged the following tide much better. The Moore brothers rounded third and Dave & Louise Roberts were also challenging. However Easthams-Typhoon had other ideas and stormed through the fleet to take second with Long Lost Brother third .
The final race again saw Arthur Andersen win but lack of consistency left them in 5th overall. The French team took second to edge out the Moores into third overall on the tie break which meant that 4th in the final race was enough for Long Lost Brother to win their first event of the year.
